THS presents: "The Man Who Came to Dinner"
The Taos High School Drama department will present Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman’s comedy, The Man Who Came to Dinner, for five performances on February 17,18, 24, and 25. All shows are at 7:00 p.m. with a matinee at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday the 18th. The production will be staged at the Taos Community Auditorium, at 133 Paseo del Pueblo Norte
The story takes place in 1939 in the fictional town of Mesalia, Ohio. Mr. Sheridan Whiteside, celebrated radio host, has fallen on the front steps of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest W. Stanley who have invited him to their home for dinner. Confined to a wheelchair and unable to leave the Stanleys’ house, Mr. Whiteside proceeds to attend to his business, including inviting a variety of people (and animals) into the home of his dismayed hosts. As the story progresses, Whiteside catalyzes conflict and catastrophe in the lives of nearly everyone around him.
The delightfully sarcastic and demanding Whiteside is played by Steve Moser who is joined by the talented Taos High School’s drama students, under the direction of Saundra Bouchie. This time tested hit is a comedy that everyone will enjoy.

Dmitri Hvorostovsky adds a new role to his distinguished repertory as Don Carlo, a royal suitor for Elvira’s hand, and Ferruccio Furlanetto is da Silva, a wealthy relative with his own designs on Elvira. “The luminous Michelle Williams goes bone-deep here. Monroe’s beauty was one of a kind. No one, not even Williams, can act it. What Williams does, with fierce artistry and feeling, is illuminate Monroe’s insights and insecurities about herself at the height of her fame. Her scenes with a superb Kenneth Branagh, his wit martini-dry as the thin-lipped, defensive Ol- ivier, ignite. Less potent is Monroe’s flirtation with Colin (Eddie Redmayne, solid nonetheless). It took a toll on Monroe to look effortlessly buoyant on camera. Williams lets us see why. It’s a great, soulful performance. Sit back and behold.” Peter Travers – Rolling Stone

For more than 30 years, Melissa Zink’s art was fueled by her great love of books. From the sculptural ceramic tableaus of the late 1970s and early ‘80s, to trompe l’oeil paintings of the early ‘90s, the bronzes, some of them heroic, of the last decade, and her most recent work which combined sculpture and painting with immaculate mixed media construction, Zink was on a restless quest for more accurate and satisfying expressions of what she has termed “the book experience.”
The quest ended with her death in July, 2009, at the age of 77. She left a rich body of work which the gallery will continue to represent.

I in earth, in heaven, or in hell?
Sleeping or waking? mad or well advised?
Known unto these, and to myself disguised!
Two sets of twins separated at birth collide in the same city without meeting for one crazy day, as multiple mistaken identities lead to confusion on a grand scale. And for no one more so than Antipholus of Syracuse and his servant Dromio who, in search of their brothers, arrive in a land entirely foreign to their distant home. A buzzing metropolis, to the outsiders it appears a place of wonderment and terror, where baffling gifts and unexplained hostilities abound.
Do you know me, sir? Am I Dromio? Am I your
man? Am I myself?
Consistently recognised by strangers, the visitors question their very selves as the turmoil escalates. Meanwhile, Aegeon, father to the Antipholus twins, has been captured searching for his sons and, as an illegal immigrant, is sentenced to death at sunset. Shakespeare’s furiously paced comedy will be staged in a contemporary world into which walk three prohibited foreigners who see everything for the first time. Lenny Henry plays Antipholus of Syracuse.

McQueen combines ’80s disco-pop and 19th-century Romantic music brilliantly, in one of the best soundtracks of the year. “Shame” isn’t an easy film to sit through, to describe or to figure out, but it’s riveting, spectacular, passionate cinema.” – Andrew O’Hehur, Salon.com

Running Time: 3 hours (estimate) including host introduction and one 20 minute intermission (10 minutes of programming; 10 minutes of countdown clock)
To come to my house, to call for what he likes, toturn me out of my own chair, to insult the family, to order his servants to get drunk, and then to tell me, “This house is mine, sir”. By all that’s impudent it makes me laugh.
Hardcastle, a man of substance, looks forward to acquainting his daughter with his old pal’s son with a view to marriage. But thanks to playboy Lumpkin, he’s mistaken by his prospective son-in-law Marlow for an innkeeper, his daughter for the local barmaid. The good news is, while Marlow can barely speak to a woman of quality he’s a charmer with those of a different stamp. And so, as Hardcastle’s indignation intensifies, Miss Hardcastle’s appreciation for her misguided suitor soars. Misdemeanours multiply, love blossoms, mayhem ensues.
This little barmaid though runs in my head most strangely, and drives out the absurdities of all therest of the family. She’s mine, she must be mine, or I’m greatly mistaken.
One of the great, generous-hearted and ingenious comedies of the English language, Goldsmith’s She Stoops to Conquer offers a celebration of chaos, courtship and the dysfunctional family.
Ticket prices are $12 for TCA members, $15 for the general public and $10 for students18 and under. Tickets may be purchased by calling the TCA office at 575-758-2052 or at the box office

The Squirm Burpee Circus!

The Squirm Burpee Circus!
Taos Community Auditorium
Making their mark on the Vaudeville Nouveau movement in America, The Squirm Burpee Circus is an exhilarating, fantastical adventure featuring classic Vaudeville comedy, high-skill circus acts and a plot rooted in American Melodrama. Forged in the fire of Denver’s Handsome Little Devils Productions, The Squirm Burpee Circus is a one-of-a-kind theatrical experience that leaves audience chanting for more.
Featuring an eye-catching cast and a beautiful, Cirque-like aesthetic, The Squirm Burpee Circus can sustain itself on eye candy alone. But they don’t stop there! The show explodes with high-energy acts like The Human Cannon, The Ladder of Love and Chainsaw Juggling, not to mention classic Vaudeville comedy routines, hilarious romantic antics and swing dancing!
The Baron Vegan von Hamburger, your humble host and sworn enemy of the Squirm Burpee Circus, will take you on a journey back in time with his breathtaking Monkey-Powered Circus Wagon. In side the Circus, anything can happen, and the Baron can’t wait to put an end to it all!
On the other hand, Mike the Handsome and Dashing Dave are two dapper Vaudevillians and world-class jugglers trying to put on a show, despite their unique girl problems. Dave falls in love with a new audience member every show, while Mike has forsworn love altogether! Add the Mike-obsessed Lovely Little Lolo to the mix, and you’ve got a recipe for romantic disaster! Together, Dave and Mike evoke the brotherly comedy of the Smothers Brothers, Martin and Lewis and the like, while Mike and Lolo’s hilarious antics are reminiscent of I Love Lucy.
Throughout the show, the evil Baron Vegan von Hamburger is plotting to destroy them, and it will take a real change of heart for him to let the Circus go! Will Dave ever find his One True Love? Will Lolo win Mike’s heart? Will the Baron succeed and obliterate them once and for all? When the show begins, you’ll wish you brought your bedpans!
Ticket prices are $12 for TCA members, $15 for the general public and $7 for youth 15 and under. Tickets may be purchased by calling the TCA office at 575-758-2052 or at the box office.

“Garbage Warrior”
Taos Community Auditorium
Earthship Biotecture and the Taos Center for the Arts present “Garbage Warrior” a film by Oliver Hodge and a talk with Eco architect Michael Reynolds on September 27, 2012 at 5:30 PM at the Taos Community Auditorium.
An ISAE 2012 Machine Wilderness event free to conference attendees, $5 at the door for the general public.
About "Garbage Warrior"
What do beer cans, car tires and water bottles have in common? Not much unless you’re renegade architect Michael Reynolds, in which case they are tools of choice for producing thermal mass and energy-independent housing. For 30 years New Mexico-based Reynolds and his green disciples have devoted their time to advancing the art of “Earthship Biotecture” by building self-sufficient, off-the-grid communities where design and function converge in eco-harmony. However, these experimental structures that defy state standards create conflict between Reynolds and the authorities, who are backed by big business. Frustrated by antiquated legislation, Reynolds lobbies for the right to create a sustainable living test site. While politicians hum and ha, Mother Nature strikes, leaving communities devastated by tsunamis and hurricanes. Reynolds and his crew seize the opportunity to lend their pioneering skills to those who need it most. Shot over three years and in four countries, Garbage Warrior is a timely portrait of a determined visionary, a hero of the 21st century. Running time 80 min.
