National Theatre London "Travelling Light"
Join us for a screening of the live production of a new play by Nicholas Wright
February 10 & 19 at 7 PM
How had a twenty–two–year–old pretentious layabout made a discovery that would elude every other cinematic pioneer for years to come?
In a remote village in Eastern Europe, around 1900, the young Motl Mendl is entranced by the flickering silent images on his father’s cinematograph. Bankrolled by Jacob, the ebullient local timber merchant, and inspired by Anna, the girl sent to help him make moving pictures of their village, he stumbles on a revolutionary
way of story-telling. Forty years on, Motl – now a famed American film director – looks back on his early life and confronts the cost of fulfilling his dreams.
Following Vincent in Brixton and The Reporter, Nicholas Wright’s new play is a funny and fascinating tribute to the Eastern European immigrants who became major players in Hollywood’s golden age. The award-winning Antony Sher – whose previous work with the National Theatre includes Primo and Stanley – returns to play Jacob.
Running Time: 3 hours (estimate) including host introduction and one 20 minute intermission (10 minutes of programming; 10 minutes of countdown clock)
Ticket prices are $12 for TCA members, $15 for the general public and $10 for students18 and under. Tickets may be purchased by calling the TCA office at 575-758-2052 or at the box office

Third Annual Taos Self Portraits

Third Annual Taos Self Portraits
Encore Gallery - Taos Community Auditorium
Peoples Choice Awards go to: Mary Ellen Mathews, April Werner & Klara Wetmore
All three were tied with the same amount of votes! Congratulations!
In it’s third year the Taos Artists Self Portraits show has been open to anyone residing in or represented by a gallery in Taos County. The call was for all types of media, drawing, painting, sculpture, mixed media and photography so it is a very eclectic exhibit. There was a size limitation of forty inches this year so that more artists could be represented in the exhibit.
This year’s self portrait show was juried by Robert Cafazzo, Robbie Steinbach and Judy Van Heyst.
The jury was looking for interesting, well-executed interpretation of the self-portrait. This show is wide open for the artist to create anything, however they want with whatever they want, that speaks to who they are as a person. It is not an easy task for any jury to choose the pieces that eventually end up in a show and it is even harder when the theme is open to almost any interpretation. To make it even more of a challenge sixty artists entered their work for the exhibition —the largest amount of entries for this show so far—so you will see an incredible variety of both media and personality on the walls of the Encore Gallery.
The Taos Center for the Arts will give prizes to the top three winners of the People’s Choice Award.
Prizes will consist of free movie passes to the TCA’s year round independent film program. The awards will be announced after the reception for the artists on December 10th, 2011 at the Encore Gallery.
The thirty artists chosen out of the sixty entries are:
Jamie Ash, Adeliza Backus-Pace, Bill Baron, Suzanne Betz, Adeana Carlyle, Susan Carpenter Sims,
Jeff Cochran, Ann Cole, Bob Cooley, Jane M Farmer, Reta Fitch, Bob Fitch, Sarah Hart, Kim Henkel,
Inger Jirby, Elizabeth Jose, Ted Keller, Jivan Lee, Mary Ellen Matthews, Wayne McKinzie, Deborah McLean, Carol Mell, Susanne Pinkham, Sam Richardson, Wesley Rusnell, Charlee Shroyer, Jean Stevens, Jonathan Sobol, April Werner and Klara Wetmore
Anyone can view all of the entries on the TCA website at www.tcataos.org/entries.

Country: UK/Germany, Language: English, Runtime: 130 min.,
Rated PG-13 for some violence and sexual content
A political thriller advancing the theory that it was in fact Edward De Vere, Earl of Oxford who penned Shakespeare's plays; set against the backdrop of the succession of Queen Elizabeth I, and the Essex Rebellion against her.
“Welsh actor Rhys Ifans (Notting Hill) plays Oxford with such fire and nobility you can almost believe he was the author of the Bard's timeless plays and sonnets. Disgrace to the royal line would follow if Oxford put his own name on his work, so rather than go with the trite Anonymous, he first considers hiring playwright Ben Jonson (Sebastian Armesto) as his surrogate. Failing that, he signs on with Will Shakespeare (Rafe Spall – all ham on wry), an illiterate comic actor. And then Queen Elizabeth gets into the act. Played in her youth by a live-wire Joely Richardson and later by her mother, a glorious Vanessa Redgrave, the virgin queen takes more than Oxford's manuscripts to bed.” –Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

"Made In New Mexico"
Taos Community Auditorium
MADE IN NEW MEXICO, an hour-long documentary that takes an inside look at the film and media industry, premieres February 1st in Santa Fe followed by screenings around the state. Shot and edited over a two-year period and financed largely through crowd funding, the film aims to educate and celebrate a healthy film and media industry. It is produced and directed by New Mexico filmmakers David Jean Schweitzer and Brent Morris.
Taos screening sponsored by the Taos Center for the Arts will take place at the Taos Community Auditorium on Sunday, February 12 at 7 PM and is free to the public. There will be a Question and Answer period after the screening with Taos resident and filmmaker David Jean Schweitzer and others.
MADE IN NEW MEXICO sheds light on many factors that make the state one of the premiere places to shoot motion pictures, television series and digital media. From a brief history of filmmaking to a discussion of the forward thinking necessary in today's competitive industry, the documentary explores the hotly debated incentive programs New Mexico initiated a decade ago. Other topics include economic impact, media education, Native American filmmakers and developing brick and mortar infrastructure necessary for a thriving industry.
Set against stunning landscapes, the filmmakers interviewed producers Stewart Lyons (Breaking Bad), Tony Mark (The Hurt Locker), Kenneth Topolsky (The Wonder Years) and Alton Walpole (The Book of Eli); studio management Rick Clemente (I-25 Studios), Jason Hool (Santa Fe Studios) and Wayne Rauschenberger (ABQ Studios); actors including Virginia Madsen, directors Aaron Shiver and Lawrence Blume, union leaders, industry veterans, educators and students. Some of the most revealing and honest points come from the backbone of the industry -- many hard-working technicians on film sets and at postproduction facilities.
Both directors work full time in the industry. Taos resident David Jean Schweitzer is also a cinematographer and long-time supporter of burgeoning talent, lending his expertise to such locally-produced films as Good Luck, Mr. Gorski and an upcoming documentary on Russell Means. Brent Morris of Albuquerque is a producer and production manager of numerous New Mexico features and recently co-directed the Filmmakers' Showcase documentary winner Flamenco School. Editor David Aubrey, composer CK Barlow, executive producers Holly Baker, Rick Clemente and Betty Weaver and co-producers Melinda Frame and Mark Steinig helped make the film possible.
The premiere takes place at 4 PM, Tuesday, February 1st at CCA's Cinematheque: 1050 Old Pecos Trail/Santa Fe, NM 87505/www.ccasantafe.org. Sponsored by IATSE Local 480, the screening will be free and open to the public as part of the annual Media Day at the Capital and feature a Q&A afterwards.
Additional Screenings (to date):
-Wednesday, February 8th at 7 PM at Film Las Cruces/Rio Grande Theater as the featured selection of the city’s monthly forum for filmmakers.
-Friday, February 10th at 4 PM at UNM’s Valencia Campus FilmFest in Los Lunas.
-Sunday, February 12 at 7 PM at the Taos Community Auditorium
Screenings are currently being scheduled in Albuquerque, Alamogordo, Farmington and Grants.
"It's been a long-standing goal to give back to this vital, artistic community in our state," says co-director Brent Morris. "Making this film connected us with so many talented and wise people.” Adds David Schweitzer, “By interviewing experts in the economics of the field, we’ve tried to create an honest portrayal of the industry’s impact on New Mexicans.”

Taos Shortz Film Fest
TCA
The Taos Shortz Film Festival is rapidly becoming an internationally known short film festival and has been buzzed as "the sundance for short films". This year we will screen over 70 short films from around the globe and offer more diversity in programming, including Thursday screenings spotlighting New Mexican students and local filmmakers, free public panel discussions on film related topics with industry professionals, an animation hotline where a phone message will be transformed into a short film, and many social event opportunities to meet and mingle. We are also excited to host the 48 Hour Film Project International Filmapalooza. Through this new partnership, Taos will host over 150 filmmakers and special guest from around the world, including cities such as Rome, Paris, Beijing, Hong Kong, and Brisbane. The weekend festival will culminate on Sunday March 4th with two separate award ceremonies at the TCA. Our goal is to grow as a leader in presenting world class indie cinema to our community and to put Taos on the map as a world-wide cinematic destination.

For more than 30 years, Melissa Zink’s art was fueled by her great love of books. From the sculptural ceramic tableaus of the late 1970s and early ‘80s, to trompe l’oeil paintings of the early ‘90s, the bronzes, some of them heroic, of the last decade, and her most recent work which combined sculpture and painting with immaculate mixed media construction, Zink was on a restless quest for more accurate and satisfying expressions of what she has termed “the book experience.”
The quest ended with her death in July, 2009, at the age of 77. She left a rich body of work which the gallery will continue to represent.

Join us for a screening of the National Theatre of London's live production of "The Comedy Of Errors" By William Shakespeare
Screenings are March 16 and March 23 at 7 PM
Running Time: 3 hours, 15 minutes (estimate) including host introduction and one 20 minute intermission (10 minutes of programming; 10 minutes of countdown clock)
I in earth, in heaven, or in hell?
Sleeping or waking? mad or well advised?
Known unto these, and to myself disguised!
Two sets of twins separated at birth collide in the same city without meeting for one crazy day, as multiple mistaken identities lead to confusion on a grand scale. And for no one more so than Antipholus of Syracuse and his servant Dromio who, in search of their brothers, arrive in a land entirely foreign to their distant home. A buzzing metropolis, to the outsiders it appears a place of wonderment and terror, where baffling gifts and unexplained hostilities abound.
Do you know me, sir? Am I Dromio? Am I your
man? Am I myself?
Consistently recognised by strangers, the visitors question their very selves as the turmoil escalates. Meanwhile, Aegeon, father to the Antipholus twins, has been captured searching for his sons and, as an illegal immigrant, is sentenced to death at sunset. Shakespeare’s furiously paced comedy will be staged in a contemporary world into which walk three prohibited foreigners who see everything for the first time. Lenny Henry plays Antipholus of Syracuse.
Ticket prices are $12 for TCA members, $15 for the general public and $10 for students18 and under. Tickets may be purchased by calling the TCA office at 575-758-2052 or at the box office
