Power Transmission - The Art of Ristow and Sporrong
June 18 - July 31, 2010
TCA: Encore Gallery
Christian Ristow and Christina Sporrong both share a passion for industrial inspired artwork and have produced countless pieces through their appreciation of mechanical symbolism.
“I have been building robotic and kinetic sculpture for almost two decades. Mechanisms are fascinating to me, but they must serve the larger narrative of the work. I firmly believe that the true strength of any artwork lies in its ability to incite strong feelings or thoughts in the viewer. I have recently become interested in artwork that is audience controlled, as this seems to me an even more literal way of encouraging involvement. My most recent large work, "The Hand of Man," exemplifies this goal. It is my strong aspiration to get people engaged, whether through thought or action, with my work!” said Ristow.
Sporrong appreciates the performance aspect of kinetic expression. “I have been working with metal since college, and was always drawn to kinetic and robotic work. I am inspired by large fiery art, performance, and sound, and have tried to merge these elements,” said Sporrong.
Ristow studied architecture at Columbia University and continued his education by working with San Francisco-based Survival Research Laboratories. Ristow’s robots play a leading role in the brave and expanding world of mechanical art.
Sporrong has a BFA from Parson School of Design in NYC and since 1998 has operated a metal fabrication shop in Taos called Spitfire Forge.
